Fort Worden and Piont Wilson Lighthouse

One of the things Drew and I both really wanted to do before we left Washington was visit Olympic National Park.  We had seen a tiny bit of it a couple years ago, but we hadn't had the chance to explore the park as thoroughly as we wanted.  So, we decided to have Drew take a four day weekend and go see Olympic National Park and some of the areas around it.

The first day we drove to a place called Fort Worden where Point Wilson Lighthouse is also situated on our way to Olympic National Park.  It was a nice stop and I really enjoyed seeing another lighthouse.  I have loved being in Washington where there are so many lighthouses to go see.  I think they are all so pretty and I love seeing the differences and what makes each one unique.  We could not go inside Point Wilson Lighthouse but we could walk around it and see it up close which was fun.

After seeing the lighthouse we went back to the old fort.  Fort Worden used to be an army base that was situated on the Puget Sound to help protect it.  There is no one stationed there now but it is a state park and they still have buildings from the fort that are standing that you can walk through.  It was a lot of fun walking through the old base and seeing all the buildings.  Drew and I also thought it was a neat location and very pretty in terms of where army bases can be located.  We had a lot of fun walking around and looking at everything, even if it was a little cold.

It was extremely windy where the lighthouse was located!  We got out of the car to go see the lighthouse and were instantly cold.  But, it was very pretty and scenic.
We went around some other buildings to get to where the light house was located.
You can tell that it is old and no longer in use, but it is still a really cool building!  I actually really like this style of light house.
This was the front of the lighthouse, where it was even more windy.
I never get tired of views like this.
Back at the fort it was way less windy and so we were not quite as cold.  We decided to just walk around all the buildings to see what they were and look at the architecture.
This is one of the main office buildings and a residential house that an officer would have lived in.  (Well, actually two officers because they were duplexes.)
I don't know why, but Alden's favorite things to find as we walked around were the fire hydrants.  He kept getting really excited whenever we would see one and would then tell us it was a fire hydrant.  His pronunciation of "hydrant" got much better throughout the day.
The old school building.
This is definitely the most unique building that we saw at Fort Worden.  They call it Alexnder's Castle and it was built 1882, before the fort even existed.  It was a really neat building to see and walk around.
Alden looking at the little castle.
The fort really was situated in a place with beautiful views.
Drew and Alden climbing the stairs to go look at the view.
It didn't have the best view from the top but it would have been a well designed place to hide large weaponry.
Walking back down to the main buildings on Fort Worden.
There was a little museum in one of the buildings that you could pay a few dollars to go through and that ended up being pretty interesting.  Alden actually really enjoyed looking at all the different things in the museum and then asking us what they were.
Alden looking up at all of the model planes.
Alden was very curious, wanting to know what everything was.  I had to read the signs on quite a few things so that I could tell him what they were.
Alden found this old operator board really interesting.
Alden and Drew both enjoyed looking at the big guns on display and talking about them.
Drew really wants a saber like the one in the case, and Alden thought the little model gun was really cool.
Drew enjoys looking at old uniforms and seeing which he likes best whenever we go somewhere that has them on display.  Alden was very curious what the pool table was and was a little disappointed that we couldn't play on it.

We had a really fun time exploring here and I am really glad that we took the time to make this stop as we started our trip!
