USS North Carolina

After visiting Bellamy and downtown Wilmington we decided to go over and see the USS North Carolina.  Visiting the ship had been a big part of why we decided to go visit Wilmington.  We were not disappointed.  All of us had a lot of fun touring the ship and learning more about it's history.  I think Drew and Alden had the most fun there, (Anders was confined to the carrier to keep him safe) but we all had a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyed touring the ship.

There was a small museum at the beginning and then they had the ship set up as a self guided tour so we could take as much time as we wanted, which was really nice.  It was also nice because there were some areas that you could skip if you didn't want to do as many stairs.  We still toured those areas, but they were less crowded than the main areas which was nice.  Alden and Drew really enjoyed touring the area where they put together the ammunition together.  It was interesting to see the rooms that would have been just filled with gun powder and to see how big the projectiles were.

We had a great time touring the ship and we were so glad that we went.  This was our favorite stop in Wilmington.  I think this is an awesome stop for people of all ages, as long as you are comfortable climbing stairs and going through areas that may feel a little confined.

This was the museum at the beginning that we looked around for a little while.  Alden loved seeing all of the model ships.

This was the top deck where the tour started.  Alden immediately headed for some of the guns.
He really wanted to try and move this one around on his own.
This ship was also able to carry a couple planes and they had one still on display on the ship.
Looking off the front of the ship with the city of Wilmington in front.
The view from the front of the ship looking back towards the middle.
Alden liked seeing the huge barrels on some of the guns on the deck of the ship.
The boys looking in to the small little chapel where they would have held church services.
Alden and Drew both had fun looking through all the windows and in all of the doors to see all of the different, interesting things.
It was really interesting to walk around in the engine room and realize that I did not understand how anything worked in there...I felt very clueless.  However, it was still interesting to see.
The boys enjoyed looking at all of the controls in the engine room.
We enjoyed walking through part of the kitchen area where Drew asked me lots of questions about what things were.
We walked through some of the eating areas.
They were showing a movie in one of the eating areas showing some of the history of the ship and Alden was very interested in watching it.
Alden was very intrigued with the sleeping quarters and bathrooms.  I think he was surprised at how close together the beds were.
I honestly don't remember what this room was...
This was Drew looking at large computer that took up an entire wall of one of the rooms.  It is amazing to think about how much smaller this would be now.
This was one of the least crowded areas we toured and it was one of the boys favorite areas.  They loved seeing all of these projectiles.
There were lots of stairs that we had to climb down to get to were they loaded all of the gun powder.  Alden did really well holding Dad's hand and I was also really careful because I had Anders in the carrier.
Still more stairs...
This was where thy would have had all of the gun powder stored.
This is an example of the officers' quarters on the ship, which were definitely much nicer than the soldiers'.
We finished touring the lower decks and finished out on the top deck.
This is how I toured the entire ship.  Anders and I had fun together but it was definitely a little more difficult getting up and down all of the stairs with him.
It was pretty impressive to see the huge cannons on the main deck.
I love my boys and we all had a great day!

We climbed up in one of the turrets and the boys had fun looking out.
This was a little boat on the deck of the USS North Carolina.  Alden really wanted to see inside of it.
Alden really wanted to try and aim a couple guns on the main deck before we left.
We had a great time touring the USS North Carolina.  There were so many things to see and learn about there.  I left so much out in this post because there was a ton to see and learn there and I honestly can only remember a portion of it.  Even after going once I wouldn't mind going back again and having more time there to learn and explore.
