Jeju Island: Botanical Gardens and Cheonjeyeon Falls

So, we got to spend this last weekend on Jeju Island which is an island just off the south coast of South Korea.  It is supposedly the "Hawaii of South Korea."  We left early on Saturday morning and got to stay until Tuesday night because Drew was able to get a four day pass.  So exciting!  We had a really good time down there and stayed really busy seeing lots of different things so the trip will be split into multiple posts.

Waiting at the Gimpo airport to board and then waiting to take off.  The nice thing was they put us on an earlier flight because we were there 1 hr and 50 min before our flight was supposed to leave.  So, we were actually only at the airport for about 45 min.

Once we got to Jeju we got our rental car and drove to the other side of the island, near where we were staying (it was only about a 50 min drive) and we went to an area called the Jungmun Resort.  There we saw multiple different things the first of which was the Yeomiji Botanical Gardens.

These were the indoor gardens that they had.  They had lots of different varieties of plants in various rooms in the building.

Then we went on to explore the outdoor gardens.
We crossed this bridge later when we went to see the Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls.

 Alden enjoyed being outside!

Here you can see Daddy coming up to tickle Alden and his reaction to being tickled.
This was the garden we didn't really understand.  Apparently in Korea grass is so rare you can name a big field filled with grass a "Lawn Garden" and people will come see it.
 This was the Japanese Garden.

Alden wasn't sure he wanted to get out of the stroller to walk around at first.

After going to the Botanical Gardens we went to the Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls which were right next to the Botanical Gardens.  There was a bit of a walk to get to the falls and we got to walk over the really neat bridge that there was a picture of earlier.  You got a really good view of the surrounding area from the middle of the bridge which was fun.  Here are some of the pictures that we took there.

 A view from the bridge.

We loved how blue the water was.

This was the upper pool which has a waterfall that runs into it after heavy rain storms.  We weren't there at the right time to see that but the pool was beautiful!

Alden enjoyed cooling off with some of the water.

More views from the bridge,

This shows the middle waterfall.  We didn't go to where you could see the third waterfall because it was more of a hike.

Alden did not want to leave this fountain when it was time to go.  First he acted like he wanted to leave, took a little tumble so Drew picked him up, then he started fussing because he wanted to walk and go back to the fountain.  Here is a little video of it.  I promise he really did enjoy most of the day even if this video makes him look sad!

So this was the first part of our trip.  Keep watching for more posts on Jeju.

  1. Hello Kirsten,

Thank you for being so comprehensive on your Jeju blog. It is really helping me plan my trip to jeju. Can you advise me if Halim Park or the botanical Gardens was more enjoyable? I only have 1.5 half days so I have to limit my activities. Thank you very much!

  2. Stephanie,
I would say Hallim park was most enjoyable for us but depending on how much time you want to spend at that location and what other things you want to do that could change. The botanical gardens are closer to other things near seogwipo and were more convinient for us to visit but we felt like Hallim park was a better value for the money spent. There is a lot more variety at Hallim park, such as a couple small caves and some animals. Both were beautiful and fun. Let me know if you if you have any other questions. Have a great time!
